Watervliet Broadway & 23rd St "Quick Build"
On Wednesday, October 7th beginning at 6:30 AM Capital Streets will be implementing temporary traffic calming (or "quick build") infrastructure at the intersection of Broadway & 23rd St in Watervliet. We need volunteers to help us realize this project quickly and efficiently. Even an hour of your time helps! This work was made possible by an AARP Community Challenge Grant of $15,000 awarded to Capital Streets for signage, paint and other traffic calming measures to address speeding and confusing crossings along this dangerous high-traffic roadway that has been the site of numerous collisions involving motor vehicles resulting in bodily harm to pedestrians and cyclists, and at least one fatality. With the support of the City of Watervliet, we will be installing traffic control devices including hardened centerlines and flex posts in the median on 23rd St, near Broadway and the southbound 787 on-ramp resulting in lane narrowing and a wider, slower turning arc for vehicles. On this day, the northbound right turn lane on Broadway will also be replaced with a buffered bike lane approaching the intersection with 23rd St. To volunteer, you must be able to lift moderately heavy items and be comfortable on your feet for a duration of time. We will have additional traffic calming measures (barriers and cones) provided by the city to make the area of implementation as safe as possible for those working in this intersection to complete the quick-build, but participating volunteers must be prepared to stay alert and aware of their surroundings at all times while working to reduce risk of incident with ongoing traffic.
